Wal-Mart to open eco-friendly superstore in Romeoville

Filed under: Green Building, Green Business, Illinois — Laura B. @ 1:29 pm

Read the full story in the Chicago Tribune.

You couldn’t tell by looking at it, but the concrete floor at the soon-to-be opened Wal-Mart Supercenter in Romeoville is made from leftover coal waste. The decorative floor boards and moldings are fashioned from material used in making the leg holes in disposable diapers. And the low-flow sensors in the bathroom sinks run off batteries charged by a turbine powered by water from the faucets.

Not your typical Wal-Mart, perhaps. But the eco-friendly store, slated to open Jan. 23, is the first of a handful of pilot stores the huge retailer plans to open nationwide in its latest push to go green and boost its image at the same time.

If you are concerned about the environmental impact of your home, what should you do when you need to replace worn-out furniture? After all, a piece of furniture can contain materials that contribute in a small way to air pollution, global warming emissions, and tropical deforestation (at least 32 million acres of tropical forest—an area larger than Mississippi—are cut down each year, releasing 20 percent of all global warming emissions).

According to Greg O’Connor, a principal of The Green Exposition, Chicago is the right place at the right time, “We were looking for a city that was committed to the environment and Chicago has dedicated itself to be one of the “greenest” cities in America.  With the backing of the city, its Mayor and a number of procurement, purchasing and facilities associations, including the local chapter of NAPM, we feel that this show will become an annual event that enhances the long list of successful trade shows that make their home in Chicago.”

O’Connor went on to say, “The conference provides school officials the opportunity to find the array of products necessary to meet the requirements set by the Green Cleaning in Schools Act. Bob Lutz: Volt Is U.S. Car Industry’s Moon Shot

Filed under: Hybrids, Transportation — Laura B. @ 10:15 am

Read the full story in Wired.

Rarely has a car generated as much excitement among consumers, or pressure for a car company, as the Chevrolet Volt.

Much of the credit for that can go to Robert Lutz, GM’s famously outspoken vice chairman, who has been a champion of the Volt. He has touted the flex-fuel and plug-in-electric hybrid as the centerpiece of GM’s campaign to become the industry’s environmental and technological leader, a title Toyota has held since bringing the Prius to the United States in 2001. Indeed, in the following interview with Wired News, he called the Volt GM’s moon shot.

So it’s not surprising there’s so much hype — and skepticism — surrounding the car. GM executives have all but promised to begin producing it in 2010. With Toyota’s recent announcement that it will bring a plug-in hybrid — albeit one with less range than the Volt — to market at the same time, the race is on.

Wired News grilled Lutz and two other top executives behind the Volt at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit about what’s really happening under the hood — and on the surface — of the highly anticipated car.

A tenfold improvement in battery life?

Read the full story at News.com.

Stanford University researchers have made a discovery that could signal the arrival of laptop batteries that last more than a day on a single charge.

The researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to give rechargeable lithium ion batteries–used in laptops, iPods, video cameras, and mobile phones–as much as 10 times more charge. This potentially could give a conventional battery-powered laptop 40 hours of battery life, rather than 4 hours.

The new batteries were developed by assistant professor Yi Cui and colleagues at Stanford University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
