Energy Upgrades Pay Off for Taxpayers and Feds

Filed under: Energy, Green Building, Green Government — Laura B. @ 11:45 am

Read the full story in NIST Tech Beat.

Buildings account for 40 percent of the energy consumed within the United States and a similar percentage of carbon dioxide emissions. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) engineers recently took a look at energy-related upgrades to their own quarters—and found energy-related improvements were well worth the expense. A NIST plan to act on the findings should save taxpayers money while helping meet a presidential order for federal agencies to cut energy consumption to 70 percent of 2003 levels by 2015.

Project Budburst

Project BudBurst is looking for volunteers in the U.S. who will observe the time at which plant buds open and leaves become visible in their neighborhoods. One of the ways scientists measure climate change is by charting changes in the timing of phenophases, or stages in the life cycles of plants. These stages are affected by temperature, rainfall, and day length, so changes in their timing may indicate an effect climate change is having on nature. Each Budburst participant will check one or more plants beginning at least a week prior to the average date of budburst for their location. When they submit their records online, they can view maps of these phenological events across the United States.

Newsom: ‘Green’ tech promises not good enough

Filed under: Climate Change, Local Initiatives, Regulation, Sustainability — Laura B. @ 10:17 am

Read the full story at News.com.

San Francisco may have shaken some flowers from its hair since hosting the first Earth Day 38 years ago, but the city continues to be named one of America’s greenest. Satirists mock its politically correct “smug cloud” of eco-hipness, but many other regions tend to follow the city’s environmental lead. For instance, more than a handful of U.S. cities are now mulling a ban on plastic grocery bags, first passed in San Francisco last March.

Fresh into his second term, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newson in January set goals for the city to become carbon-neutral by 2020 by retooling laws and taxes related to energy, transportation, buildings, wildlife, waste, and environmental justice. He has come under fire for dedicating more than two dozen city jobs to fighting climate change. However, the mayor maintains that government can’t be aggressive enough in cleaning up its part of the planet. Newsom discussed the promises and pitfalls of green technology with CNET at City Hall on Friday.

EPA Tool Helps Communities Tap into Energy Savings

Filed under: Energy, Wastewater Treatment, Web Resources — Laura B. @ 9:53 am

Read the press release.

America’s drinking water and wastewater facilities can now save energy and reduce their carbon footprint with expanded tools available from EPA’s Energy Star Program. Enhancements to Portfolio Manager, the agency’s popular energy tracking tool for commercial facilities, allow water utilities to track energy use and associated carbon emissions, set targets for investment priorities, and verify efficiency improvements. Water and wastewater facilities are energy intensive, accounting for more than one-third of municipal energy use. Improving the energy efficiency of America’s drinking water and wastewater systems by 10 percent would save more than 5 billion kilowatt-hours each year representing a cost savings of about $400 million annually.

Green Libraries Unconference

Filed under: Libraries, Meetings, Sustainability — Laura B. @ 9:48 am

Wednesday, April 23, 2008
9 am – 4:30 p.m.
Arlington Public Library (Arlington, VA)
Visit the Unconference wiki

The Arlington Public Library invites you to join us for a very special Unconference on the greening of public libraries.

With an ever-growing emphasis on creating sustainable spaces and being more environmentally friendly, as a public library in our communities we have a pivotal role in best practice benchmarking and public education. Library staff are often among the most environmentally conscious folks around, and often struggle to practice good stewardship of resources at work.

The unconference, which has its genesis at Library Camp NYC, will bring together folks who wish to exchange ideas and make a visible and positive change in the sustainable business practices at their libraries, as well as developing public information for their communities.

An unconference is a conference where the content of the sessions is created and managed by the participants rather than by one or more organizers in advance of the event. (Wikipedia) The GreenLibraries Unconference will be following Open Space Technology, which adheres to certain principles: 1. Whoever comes are the right people, 2. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have, 3. Whenever it starts is the right time, and 4. Whenever it is over it is over.

Open Space Technology is an energizing and emergent way to organize an agenda for a conference. (Wikipedia) We will focus our attention for the day on topics of interest in the general realm of sustainability, greening of our facilities and business practices, and personal commitments to sustainability.
