For the uninitiated, the Freecycle Network consists of thousands of online groups that allow people in a local area to give away unwanted items and acquire things they think they can use. Twice daily, e-mails announce what’s offered, promised and taken. All of which is overseen by volunteer monitors who make sure that people don’t try to give away surly teenagers, for example, or other unauthorized items. Typically, items are left on doorsteps for easy pickup. Think of it as a sort of cyber trash picking — gems mixed with junk — all in an effort to reduce the amount of garbage we set out at the curb. The best part: Everything is free.
