College FilterForGood Eco-Challenge Empowers College Students to Improve Their Campuses

Do you have an idea to change the world? Now’s your chance! The Brita Products Company is challenging college students nationwide to put their environmental passion into action and develop programs to green their campuses.

The College FilterForGood Eco-Challenge aims to empower eco-conscious students to create projects that improve the environment on their campuses. Five college students will be chosen to each receive a $10,000 grant to bring their ideas to life. Proposals will be evaluated on creativity, environmental benefit, educational impact and best use of time and budget. Applications can be submitted by individual students on their own or as a part of a club or class.

California scientists today announced a formula to calculate how much carbon dioxide (CO2) can be offset by increasing the reflectivity of urban surfaces like rooftops. The news was announced at the California Energy Commission’s Fifth Annual Climate Change Research Conference.

Nanotechnology: A Brave New World Requires Bold New Research Approaches

Nanotechnology opens new worlds of possibilities for important computer, medical and environmental applications. To ensure nanotechnology is developed in a responsible manner, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and EPA awarded $38 million to establish two Centers for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEINs). EPA contributed $5 million to the overall award, which is the largest award for nanotechnology research in the Agency’s history. The new centers will conduct research on the possible environmental, health and safety impacts of nanomaterials, using very different approaches than previous studies.
