			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Continuing our focus on Indiana P2 programs, the <a href="https://engineering.purdue.edu/CMTI/" target="_blank">Clean Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI)</a>, based at <a href="http://www.purdue.edu/" target="_blank">Purdue University</a>, provides technical assistance, outreach, education, planning services and research to facilitate the adoption of pollution prevention/clean manufacturing strategies by Indiana manufacturing facilities.</p>
<p>CMTI offers assistance in all manufacturing sectors, but has special expertise in plastics (including fiber reinforced plastic), wood products, metal finishing, metal and plastic coatings, foundries and motor vehicle parts manufacturing.</p>
<p>CMTI co-founded (in 1996), and continues to manage, the <a href="https://engineering.purdue.edu/CMTI/CARL/" target="_blank">Coating Applications Research Laboratory (CARL)</a> on the Purdue campus. The lab allows manufacturers to test state-of-the-art coating and curing technologies under the guidance of CMTI engineers expert in their application. CMTI also offers <a href="https://engineering.purdue.edu/CMTI/EMS/EMS.html" target="_blank">ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) services</a> businesses and government entities. <a href="https://engineering.purdue.edu/CMTI/Seminars_Conferences_Workshops/" target="_blank">Training</a> and <a href="https://engineering.purdue.edu/CMTI/EEAP/" target="_blank">energy efficiency assessments</a> are also provided by CMTI.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/services/energy_aware.html" target="_blank">October is Energy Awareness Month</a>, so we turn to a trusted source for information on industrial energy efficiency for the site of the month. The<a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/index.html" target="_blank"> Industrial Technologies Program (ITP)</a> leads national efforts to improve industrial energy efficiency and environmental performance. ITP is part of the <a href="http://www.eere.energy.gov/" target="_blank">U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy </a>and contributes to its efforts by partnering with U.S. industry in a coordinated program of research and development, validation, and dissemination of energy efficiency technologies and operating practices. In the <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/technologies/industries.html" target="_blank">Industrial Technology R&amp;D section</a> of the site, learn more about cost-shared support to R&amp;D partnerships addressing key energy intensive industries (aluminum, chemical, forest products, glass, metal casting, mining, petroleum refining and steel) which account for a full 75% of industrial energy consumption and represent the largest opportunity to increase energy efficiency in the industrial sector. The <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/technologies/crosscutting_technologies.html" target="_blank">Crosscutting Technologies section</a> of the site deals with key technologies widely used in the energy intensive industries and improving efficiency in these processes. The <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/bestpractices/" target="_blank">Best Practices section</a> includes information on plant assessments (such as the Save Energy Now program), software tools, training and publications.</p>
<p>Note that applications are currently being accepted for the<a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/saveenergynow/assessments.html" target="_blank"> Save Energy Now Assessments</a>. Only manufacturing facilities in the United States and territories are eligible for a Save Energy Now energy assessment. To be considered for an assessment, applicants must complete and submit the online application form. All assessments will be completed by December 31, 2008. Applications will be selected based on overall energy consumption.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.newdream.org/consumer/marketplace.php" target="_blank">New American Dream&#8217;s Conscious Consumer Marketplace</a> can also help you find environmentally and socially responsible Valentine&#8217;s Day gifts, such as flowers, chocolate, and jewelry. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7-135-3585_4848---,00.html" target="_blank">Michigan Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP)</a> is sponsoring a free pollution prevention technology workshop on<strong> advanced coolant and filter media usage reduction technology for the metal working process.</strong>  The workshop is <strong>October 2, 2007 from 10 a.m. to noon</strong> at the Crystal Filtration Company, 2938 Waterview, Rochester Hills, MI.</p>
<p>The (Diamler) Chrysler Detroit Axle plant, in cooperation with Kettering University and Crystal Filtration, integrated an innovative coolant filtration system into the facility&#8217;s primary metal working operation.  The system achieved a 40 &#8211; 60 percent reduction in filter media usage resulting in an anticipated annual savings of up to $60,000.</p>
<p>Professor Terri Lynch-Caris, Kettering University, will present the technology, its implementation, and the project&#8217;s economical and environmental analysis.  Mr. Glenn Rowe, Crystal Filtration, will describe the system installation and technology&#8217;s applications.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.dec.ny.gov/" target="_blank">New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)</a> recently <a href="http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/37708.html" target="_blank">announced</a> that it will host a workshop on the European Union&#8217;s Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances (REACH).  REACH is a recently adopted overhaul of the chemicals management system in the EU.  REACH has important implications for United States firms exporting to EU member states and the rules became effective on June 1, 2007.  The training session will take place on <strong>September 26, 2007 at DEC headquarters in Albany, NY.</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.glrc.us/" target="_blank">Great Lakes Regional Collaboration</a> announces a sixty day public comment period for a <a href="http://www.glrc.us/initiatives/toxics/drafthgphasedownstrategy.html" target="_blank">Draft Great Lakes Mercury in Products Phase-Down Strategy</a>.  In fulfillment of a Collaboration Strategy recommendation, in April 2006, State, Tribal, and City staff commenced development of a basin-wide Strategy for the phase-down of mercury in products and waste.</p>
<p>A draft Strategy is now available for public comment at <a href="http://glrc.us/initiatives/toxics/drafthgphasedownstrategy.html" target="_blank">http://glrc.us/initiatives/toxics/drafthgphasedownstrategy.html</a>, <strong>through October 27, 2007.</strong>  We invite comments on the Strategy itself and on how best to move forward with implementation, as well as commitments from stakeholders to implement components of the Strategy.</p>
<p>A copy of the draft document was first distributed to government agency experts for technical review, then revised and distributed to a limited group of industry and environmental group stakeholders.  A summary of comments that were received and incorporated can also be found at the above web link.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7-135-3585_4848---,00.html" target="_blank">Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP)</a> is hosting a free pollution prevention technology workshop on the successful adoption of advanced rinse water recycling systems within the electroplating process.  The workshop is August 17th at the KC Jones Plating Company, Hazel Park, MI.  The workshop is entitled <a href="http://www.glrppr.org/docs/RETAPP2_Workshop_Announcement.pdf" target="_blank"><em>A Chemical-Metal Zero-Discharge Technology for Profitable Pollution Prevention in Electroplating Processes.</em></a></p>
<p>KC Jones Plating, in cooperation with the Laboratory for Multiscale Complex Systems Science and Engineering at Wayne State University (WSU), integrated advanced rinse water recycling systems into their bronze cyanide plating line.  These changes successfully reduced the line&#8217;s chemical and water usage requirements by 20 &#8211; 45 percent, while reducing associated wastewater treatment costs by up to 70 percent.  The simple payback for the project was less than one year.</p>
<p>Professor Yinlun Huang will present the technology, its implementation, and the project&#8217;s economical and environmental analysis.  Mr. Thomas Januszek and his team at KC Jones Plating will describe the system installation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.chemicalspolicy.org/images/footer.lcsp.logo.gif" align="left" height="96" width="243" />The <a href="http://www.chemicalspolicy.org/" target="_blank">Chemicals Policy Initiative of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production</a> at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the <a href="http://www.michigan.gov/deq" target="_blank">Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)</a> are offering a training on the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals) legislation in September 2007.  The training, entitled <em>Turning REACH into an Opportunity: A Training on</em><em> Implementing The European Union&#8217;s New REACH Legislation</em>, will be held September 27 at the <a href="http://www.lcc.edu/maps/westcampus.htm" target="_blank">Lansing Community College West Campus</a> in Lansing, MI.  The following press release from the DEQ describes the training:</p>
<p>&#8220;REACH— Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals— is the recently<img src="http://www.michigan.gov/images/deq-logo-ess_86310_7.jpg" align="right" height="116" width="112" /> adopted overhaul of the chemicals management system in the European Union (EU).  Entered into force June 1, 2007, REACH has important implications for US firms exporting to European Member States.</p>
<p>Attend this one-day training to learn from one of the few REACH authors and other experts about what you need to know to comply with REACH, stay competitive, and advance more sustainable chemicals management in your firm.</p>
<p><strong>Why Should I Attend?</strong><br />
The new REACH system puts much more responsibility on companies to collect data on most chemicals on the market, assess the risk of these chemicals, and define safe use down the supply chain.  It also requires companies to justify continued use of chemicals of very high concern.  Any company exporting chemicals or chemical mixtures into the EU; competes in Europe, the US or elsewhere with products meeting European standards; or exports finished products to Europe has been effected by REACH.</p>
<p>This training session will help US companies prepare for REACH and turn it from a challenge into an opportunity.  European companies have been preparing for the challenges and opportunities of REACH for several years— US companies must be prepared to remain competitive.  Attendees will receive a database of tools and resources to help them make informed decisions about chemicals alternatives.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A free new tool has been launched to promote the application of industrial ecology and facilities research on material flows.  The <a href="http://www.glrppr.org/iem/">Industrial Ecology of Metals Forum</a> maintains two web-based dynamic and interactive compendia of data: one containing the <a href="http://www.glrppr.org/iem/concentrations.cfm?element_id=0">concentrations</a> of metals found in various high-volume materials, and the other containing the <a href="http://www.glrppr.org/iem/flowrates.cfm">flow rate information</a> for high-volume materials.  A <a href="http://lib.wmrc.uiuc.edu/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=1">discussion group</a> focused on building and maintaining the compendia completes the Forum.  The Forum also contains an area for comments on data quality issues.  The compendia are available to the general public for viewing, but only discussion group members can make additions to or comments on data contained in the compendia.
